How good of a chemist are you?

teamastry Dec 14, 2021

Building a team that has chemistry starts with the hiring process.

Sure, a candidate can look great on paper. But if there is no initial chemistry, or if their values, work ethic, and personality do not jive with the rest of the team, building chemistry later becomes practically impossible.

Now, we’re not suggesting everyone on your team needs to be best friends.

What we are saying is that, as a leader, it’s your responsibility to balance the personalities and chemistry of the people on your team – and that can be a real challenge to do when adding a new personality into the mix.

But how does chemistry happen in the first place?

Naturally-occurring chemistry happens when everyone understands their role and feels their value.

The more you appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of the people on your team, the more success you’ll have positioning them in ways that allow them to perform to their potential.

People doing work they feel confident in and are good at have a more positive work mindset which fosters positive professional relationships and team chemistry.

Want to work on the chemistry in your group? Here are two things to consider this week:

  1. Chances are, the people on your team have more in common than they think. Get to know each team member personally and help connect members with common interests, passions, and strengths. You can strengthen your team and foster chemistry in the workplace by expediting this connection. Acknowledging each person’s strengths and abilities gives them a work zone where they feel valued and connected.

  2.  Be intentional about the way you talk to your team and about your team. Your goal is to unify your team as a unit, not separate them by their differences. Pay close attention to members who isolate themselves. Their self-isolation can harm team chemistry.
